Technology adoption has the tendency to start with the consumers first. Take, for example, the Personal Computers (PCs), most of the end-users bought them initially for their personal use at homes and later we see a wider adoption at the offices.

Another example would be the mobile phones – how many of us are being offered a second sim card or an office mobile phone as our official communication device? In the early days, most of us bought our own phones because it was a necessity. Nowadays BYOD has become a norm – now there is no reason to access our companies’ emails, HR, or CRM systems from remote.

There are much other hardware and software that used to be in the consumer space but now have been adopted in the enterprise space. So, it is not going to be a surprise if the growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) will start from the consumer market and finally will end up in the enterprise. The question is – which IoT device will be the main enabler?

Wearables – The Best IoT Teacher

Besides the smartphones (many people don’t think the smartphone is an IoT device), I personally believed the wearables are the primary enabler for IoT. The evolution from simple health tracking to a smartwatch indirectly educates the end-users on the importance of IoT. It has given the individual the ability to understand the condition of the most important asset in our life i.e. the health of our body. Wearables are the simplest form of IoT application that one would understand – it has all the elements and criteria of IoT i.e. sensors, connectivity, and insights (process and people).

Now, imagine in the future, the same people who wear wearables also wanted their company’s assets to be monitored autonomously. The ability to have the knowledge of their business “health” i.e. the productivity and efficiency level which translates to revenue and costs. All of this is possible when those assets (building, parking, factory, office, transport, etc) are all “IoT-enabled”.

Don’t you wish that companies have this “IoT-conscious” generation of employees? That would make IoT adoption much faster, right? What do you think?
