In IoT, we can think of the value chain a bit like an oil and gas industry analogy:

Upstream = the raw data production side (sensors, devices, networks). Downstream = the data consumption side (applications, analytics, services for end-users).

Here’s the breakdown:

IoT Upstream Products (Data Generation & Collection Layer)

These are products and components that produce or move IoT data.

IoT Devices & Sensors Temperature sensors, GPS trackers, smart meters, wearables, cameras. They capture raw data from the physical world. Embedded Systems / Hardware Modules Microcontrollers, chips, boards (Arduino, ESP32, Raspberry Pi, etc.). Provide the computing base for IoT devices. Connectivity Modules 5G/4G modems, LoRaWAN gateways, NB-IoT modules, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth. Enable communication between device and network. Gateways & Edge Devices Collect data from multiple sensors, preprocess it, and send it to the cloud.

Think of upstream as the production line of IoT data.

IoT Downstream Products (Data Processing & Value Creation Layer)

These are products that process, analyse, and deliver value from IoT data.

IoT Platforms Middleware like Favoriot, AWS IoT, Azure IoT. Manage device connections, store and process data, provide dashboards and APIs. Analytics & AI Engines Predictive maintenance systems, anomaly detection, image recognition. Convert raw data into insights and decisions. Applications & Dashboards Smart city dashboards, factory monitoring apps, healthcare apps. Show insights in user-friendly ways. Business & Industry Solutions Smart agriculture (precision irrigation), fleet management, energy optimisation, healthcare monitoring. These are the customer-facing outputs of IoT.

Think of downstream as the refined product: insights, services, and apps built on IoT data.

Simple Analogy

Upstream IoT = sensors, devices, connectivity → data wells that pump raw information. Downstream IoT = platforms, analytics, apps → refineries and petrol stations that turn data into useful services.
