Sometimes people do mixed-up with both terms – platform and ecosystem. However, the simplest way to differentiate them is that the IoT platform is in the realm of technology. It can be in the form of middleware that resides in the cloud or on-premise. And the IoT ecosystem is in the realm of business whereby it’s comprised of different players such as users, device players, telcos, platform providers, system integrators, applications developers, resellers, and others.
The center of the ecosystems can be either in any of the value chains. However, normally, it will be the IoT platform provider who links up all the rest of the industry players. The platform is the piece of technology that “glues” both hardware and software in a standardized manner.
