Introduction

On the evening of October 25, 2023, the area surrounding Jaya Industrial Park, located in Ara Damansara, Petaling Jaya, has been declared safe and has subsequently been reopened.

This follows an earlier incident of an ammonia gas leak at a local ice factory.

Incident Overview

The alarming situation arose when heightened pollution index readings were detected, prompting immediate action from the local authorities.

ACP Mohamad Fakhrudin Abdul Hamid, the Petaling Jaya district police chief, later confirmed the safe reopening of the area.

He highlighted that the decision was made once pollution index readings were observed to return to normal levels at 5:30 pm on the mentioned date.

Emergency Response

The police department had swiftly enforced a closure of approximately 400 square meters surrounding the site of the incident as a safety precaution.

This was due to the pollution index readings that had exceeded the safe limit of 200 particles per million (ppm), noting a reading of 240ppm inside the factory and approximately 200ppm in the neighboring areas. A MERS 999 emergency call received at 10:17 pm on October 24 initiated a rapid response, leading to the deployment of 27 firefighters alongside the police to the scene.

Continuous Monitoring and Future Safety Measures

In his statement, ACP Mohamad Fakhrudin Abdul Hamid assured the public that periodic monitoring would be diligently carried out by the Petaling Jaya police mobile patrol vehicles to prevent any similar incidents in the future.
