The Internet of Things (IoT) has many benefits – (1) Reducing costs, (2) Increasing efficiency, (3) Increasing loyalty, (4) New products and business models (5) Increasing revenue streams. But can it detect corruption? An interesting question that I believe can be a controversy and dilemma for many organizations depending on which side of the fence you are sitting – IoT will become your friend or foe?
IoT is all about monitoring and managing your precious assets.
The tiny embedded sensors can become your faithful watchdog or spies that silently send messages about their conditions and environments. Let’s take a look at the below examples:
- Why must your assets, such as lighting, air conditioning, chiller, etc., be replaced when the equipment is still working in good shape? Why new LED lighting that can last for more than five years is not seen as favorable compared to previous hardware that is regularly replaced?
- Why did the enforcement officers not do their job of proper and timely enforcement when the IoT system detected violations of services?
- Why do items in transit differ from the ones listed in the system? Why are we still adamant about using pen and paper?
- Why can’t we continuously monitor and measure the performance of the contractors?
- Why are we reluctant to make our KPI transparent to the public? Data gathered from various sensors need not require a further “cleansing process” when the data can be displayed on a dashboard on a real-time basis.
Note that all the data captured from these sensors (a.k.a spies) can be aggregated and visualized using the Favoriot IoT platform.
